Belgian Cyclist Antoine Demoitie Killed by Motorbike During Race

Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitie was killed last Sunday in an accident, he fell during the Gent-Wevelgem race in Belgium and then was struck by a race escort motorbike.

The 25 year old member of Belgium's Wanty-Gobert team fell 90 miles into the race along with 3 other cyclists. A passing motorbike hit him while he was on the ground. He was rushed to Ypres hospital and then transferred to an intensive care unit at Lille where he died as a result of complications in his injuries.

Because of this tragic incident, the Association of Professional Cyclists (CPA) is calling for an urgent investigation into his death.

"The CPA and all the riders demand that light is shed on the accident immediately and the circumstances that caused it," the association said in a statement on Monday.

CPA president Gianni Bugno, who won the world road race title in 1991 and 1992, said it was a time of "sadness and sorrow".

"We do not want to make controversy but we have so much frustration inside," added the Italian. "We have always stated that the safety of the riders must come first.

"I do not want to accuse anyone but make everyone reflect on the responsibility we have to ensure that a very high level of attention and awareness is maintained plus control over safety standards during each race," Bugno said.

A prankster named TwinzTV made a YouTube video of supposedly thieves stealing rigged bikes that have exploding saddle to stop these bike thieves. This is a nasty way to get back at these thieves. Sorry bike thieves, you won't be having kids from this point forward.

Sao Paolo, Brazil Naked Bike Ride 2016

Thousands of nude participants join the naked bike ride in Sao Paolo, Brazil campaigning for better cycling safety and cleaner environment. The event was organized as part of International World Naked Bike Ride.

They are demanding for improvement of road conditions and more safety protocols, claiming that Sao Paolo has some of the world's most dangerous roads for cyclists. They also and wanted to draw attention to the health and environmental benefits of cycling.


   

2016 Melbourne Naked Bike Ride event

The yearly naked bike ride event happened in Melbourne last February 28, 2016. There were hundred of participants that wore nothing but sunblock and a helmet. It was organized by Dallas Goldburg. The event is to raise awareness about the environment and cyclist safety. 

The participants cycle throughout the 15-kilometre route around Albert Park and St Kilda beach.

Cyclist Hit by A Barrier During a Race

Argentinian Cyclist Eduardo Sepulveda was knocked unconscious, after being hit by a barrier blown into his path by strong winds. It happened when he was around 125 meters to the finish line. The freak accident broke his wrist and caused other minor injuries, he'll be out for 3 months.

This is the 2nd major crash for Sepulveda in just 5 months. He broke his fibia at the Coppa Agostoni last September. The 24-year-old Fortuneo-Vital Concept rider expects to be able to return for the Tour de France later this year.

Video: Motorcycle Rider Flips in Air After Being Hit by SUV

Yeah, I know this is not a cycling news but it's worth it since the accident was shocking. It happened in Baguio City, Philippines. A dash cam from a vehicle caught an SUV which is overtaking them, then almost immediately a motorcycle, pop up in front of the SUV. It was a head on collision that caused the motorcycle flips in the air.

The video was posted on YouTube on February 15, 2016 and the poster wrote that the incident happened at the Marcos Highway Flyover. The video’s time-stamp shows the date at February 13, 2016 and the time starting from 9:49.

The SUV overtook the other vehicles on the right lane, and used the left lane that is for vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.

According to local news, the driver of the motorcycle luckily survive the ordeal with broken bones and concussion.

Belgian cyclist Caught using a hidden motor in competition

This is worst than Lance Armstrong's steroid issue. Cycling authorities caught 19-year-old Belgian cyclist Femke Van den Driessche using a bike with a concealed motor in the frame. The race she was competing in is the Cyclocross World Championships in Zolder, Belgium.

Last Sunday, Union Cycliste International confirmed the bike is loaded with a motor:

Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) confirms that pursuant to the UCI's Regulations on technological fraud a bike has been detained for further investigation following checks at the Women's Under 23 race of the 2016 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships. This does not concern any of the riders on the podium. Further details will be shared in due course.

It was also reported by AP that Italian bike manufacturer Wilier Triestina said they will sue Van den Driessche.

This is the first official case of "mechanical doping" or "bike doping" at a major cycling race event.

That tiny motor can be a big boost to the cyclist if it used in a strategic way.

Van den Driessche has denied that is was her bike, she said it was identical to her own but belonged to a friend and that a team mechanic had given it to her by mistake before the race
